Research

I am working on the phylogeny and biogeography of Garcinia (Clusiaceae). Garcinia is a common genus in the tropics including Australia. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L. ), which originated from Indo-Malaya region, is now cultivated in several countries as an agriculture commodity for fresh fruit. There are over 250 species around the world with high morphological diversity, in particular in the male flowers. The male flower characters have been used in previous infrageneric classification of the genus.

The aims of my PhD project is to analyse the phylogeny, evolution and biogeography of Garcinia, to investigate whether the monotypic genus Septogarcinia Kosterm. merits generic status or needs to be sunk into Garcinia, to elucidate the phylogenetic position of Australian Garcinia species, and to examine if there is evidence of hybridization between Garcinia species. This study is using molecular and morphological data.
